Bakteri mempunyai bentuk yang bermacam-macam. Bentuk bakteri yang paling dikenal adalah batang atau basil (tunggal: basilus), bulat atau cocci (tunggal: coccus), dan spiral atau spirila (tunggal: spirilum) . Bakteri coccus ada yang tersusun sendiri (monococcus) atau berkelompok. Bentuk kelompok bakteri, yaitu bergandengan (diplococcus), untaian anggur (staphylococcus), rantai (streptococcus), dan tersusun delapan-delapan (sarcina). Bakteri bacillus ada yang berdiri sendiri (monobacillus), berpasangan (diplobacillus), dan membentuk rantai (streptobacillus). Bakteri spiral ada yang berbentuk koma (vibrio), spiral, dan spiroseta (spirochete).
